Obsessed with Pagerank

Are you obsessed with your Google Pagerank? Are you the type who logs onto his favorite blog forum or email group and brag about how uber your pagerank of X in Y amount of time is?

Why is that? Is this the blogger’s way of asking “How much do you bench press?” or “How fast is your PC’s Super Pi score?”

According to Wikipedia, Pagerank is :

…a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

Did you get all that? Here’s a simpler explanantion:

In other words, a PageRank results from a “ballot” among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it (”incoming links”). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

What’s next? Bragging about the number of RSS readers or Mybloglog members? Stay tuned.

i didn’t really mind about PR until my first blog got a PR4 sometime in October, and some of the bloggers in my blogroll were complaining of the PR slash because of their paid posts.

I guess the obsession has something to do with the monetization opportunities.

hi ceblogger,

i dropped 3 freakin PR notches yet i still make roughly the same amount in adsense. higher sa direct. but that experience may be the exception rather than the rule…

also Local ad agencies dont ask your PR, its usually pageviews and uniques.

TLA earnings did drop due to the PR slash since it ties PR with your value.

Thanks for visiting!
