How to Backup your precious Blog

Imagine your blog going down for say, an hour. What about 1 day? What about a week? Scary, no? No more traffic, no more adsense, no more revenue and worst of all, imho, no more loyal readers. Probloggers can earn good money from their blog/s so they need to start thinking about their blog/s as if these were their precious laptops or cellphones. We need to keep our data safe in the event of a server crash or db corruption. While this may have a greater effect on independent bloggers, it is still useful for any problogger to know how to keep their files backed up for any future possibility.

Here is how you can backup your WordPress Blog:

  • WordPress 2.x Users: Activate and Use Skippy’s plugin thats included in the standard WP install since 2.0
or download via http://www.skippy.net/blog/plugins/. Note that this will only backup your wordpress databases, you might wnat to read the next one for a more complete backup procedure.
  • Here’s a very good visual guide on how to backup your WordPress DB. Needs MySql Access.
  • For users who have FTP access to their blogs, Simply Download all the files in your wordpress install folder. for ex. if you installed it at www.domain.com/blog then copy all files in that directory
  • You may want to do an incremental and full backup regularly. Weekly and monthly schedules are fine for most blogs but heavy content sites probably need to backup their files more often. I suggest burning these onto CDs or DVDs for easier filing/archiving.

Hopefully with these steps, you can keep your data safe and secure even when something bad happens to your wordpress installation. Happy proBlogging!
